It’s simple, affordable, and totally customizable. With a weekend’s worth of assembling IKEA cabinets, you can transform your entryway from chaotic to clutter-free.
How to Build a Hallway Closet With IKEA BESTÅ Cabinets
What You’ll Need
- 1 IKEA BESTÅ TV bench with doors/LAPPVIKEN white (70 ⅞” x 16 ½” x 25 ¼”)
- 3 IKEA BESTÅ drawer frames (23 ⅝” x 9 ⅞” x 15 ¾”)
- 3 IKEA LAPPVIKEN drawer fronts, white (23 ½” x 15”)
- 3 IKEA BESTÅ drawer frames (23 ⅝” x 5 ⅞” x 15 ¾”)
- 3 IKEA LAPPVIKEN drawer fronts, white (23 ½” x 10”)
- 2 IKEA BESTÅ top panel, oak veneer (47 ¼” x 16 ½”)
- 1 IKEA BESTÅ shelf with doors/LAPPVIKEN white (23 ⅝” x 16 ½” x 50 ¾”)
- 1 IKEA BESTÅ TV bench with doors/LAPPVIKEN white (70 ⅞” x 16 ½” x 15”)
- Clothes rail
- Acoustic panels
- 6 Drawer handles
- Heavy-duty adhesive
- Decorative hooks (optional)
- Basics — drill, screw gun, tape measure, pencil
1. Assemble all the IKEA Units
Put together the BESTÅ TV bench with doors and all the other IKEA pieces according to the instructions. IKEA pieces are truly the meat and potatoes of this hack, with little extra supplies or materials needed. Therefore, you’ll spend the bulk of your time assembling all the different components.
2. Position All of the Cabinets
Build your wardrobe cabinet by positioning and stacking the BESTÅ to fit your needs. Laura has the larger TV unit on the bottom and the shorter one mounted to the wall. The drawers are in the bottom unit.
The shelf with doors goes between the two TV units on one end. Attach all of the pieces to the wall using the appropriate hardware and to each other to ensure maximum stability.
3. Add the Panels
After securing all of the cabinets, add the two BESTÅ panels using heavy-duty adhesive, one on the top and one on the bottom. Some comments questioned whether the top panel would fall off, but Laura said it’s holding strong. (Plus, the clothes rod screwed into it is likely to add some extra reinforcement.)
Use adhesive to install the acoustic panels on the rear wall and exposed side of the shelf unit. Laura got hers from Woodupp Germany @woodupp_de. This adds a modern, sleek touch that enhances the custom feel of the overall design.
4. Incorporate the Hardware and Finishes
The final step is adding the clothes rod, handles, and hooks as desired. If your wardrobe isn’t near a wall like Laura’s, look for a clothes rod with top mounts so you can install both ends into the top panel and cabinet. For a final touch, add lighting and other details to make the piece your own.
Total cost of IKEA pieces: About $1,065
